Following the lead of major countries like the USA, Great Britain, and Germany, the European Union has now made long-term security commitments to Ukraine. This move is part of a broader effort to support Ukraine amidst ongoing aggression from Russia. The new agreement also introduces a crisis mechanism to address future threats swiftly. During the recent EU summit in Brussels, the agreement was signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and EU Council President Charles Michel.

Solidarity in Challenging Times

Chancellor Olaf Scholz described the security commitments as “a sign of solidarity in difficult times.” President Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the support but also urged EU countries to expedite the delivery of weapons and ammunition, emphasizing the need to dismantle Russia’s belief that it can achieve its goals through war. “Europe has shown that it can be efficient,” Zelenskyy remarked on the social media platform X, also thanking the “historic Belgian EU presidency” and wishing effectiveness to Hungary, the next EU Council President.
