The United States is ramping up its deterrence strategy in Europe with a significant move to counter Russian aggression. From 2026 onward, long-range cruise missiles, such as the Tomahawk, will be stationed in Germany for the first time since the 1990s.

According to a statement released by the White House during the ongoing NATO summit, these “long range fire capabilities” will initially be deployed temporarily, with plans for potential permanent placement. This marks the first deployment of conventional long-range weapons in Germany since the end of the Cold War, enabling the USA to target deep within Russian territory.

The White House emphasized that the new cruise missiles, including the Tomahawk and SM-6 types, offer a “significantly greater range” than current systems deployed in Europe. Furthermore, plans include the future stationing of hypersonic weapons, which are currently in testing, in Germany.

This strategic deployment underscores the close ties between the US and NATO, reflecting their commitment to European security. The announcement aims to showcase the alliance’s determination to bolster defenses against Russian threats.
